The clear solution imo is to pool your resources for a monthly or bi-monthly professional cleaning service. This will close the gap between your levels of cleanliness and his, without requiring him to essentially change personalities (impossible) or you to contort yourself into accepting grime without becoming uncomfortable (impossible) or you to swallow your comments for fear of being perceived as a nag which will result in your feeling resentful (damaging to the relationship).

Yes, this will require some re-allocation of budget, but if you hire out specifically for the tasks that he seems blind to and you seem most concerned about, you can maximize the spend-for-relationship-happiness. Even a full deep-clean in Manhattan for a one bedroom is around $200, so you can judge if the one or two date nights out per month you will have to skip or the disappearing of this problem (so serious you wrote into an advice column about it!) is more beneficial to your coupledom's wellbeing. Perhaps to meet the budget you will have to give up a couple's therapy appointment, or a stay a less-nice hotel on the next vacation, or space out your beauty appointments, or go to one fewer weddings this year, or whatever (I don't know your life!), but those things will be less noticeable and corrosive than letting this problem fester.
